Handgun 103: Intermediate Handgun (8 Hours)

Overview

Ready to take your skills to the next level? This one-day course builds upon and refines the skill sets previously established in Handgun 102 while also introducing shooters to core shooting principles. Students will discuss and learn the fundamentals of moving then shooting, receive in depth training on malfunctions and how to clear them, learn different reloading techniques, discuss different sight picture options and how they relate to speed and distance, learn one handed shooting techniques, and get comprehensive training in foundational handgun marksmanship.

Experience Requirements

We require the successful completion of Handgun 102 or equivalent before attending this course. The student MUST know and be able to demonstrate how to safely load, fire, and unload a handgun as well as have demonstrated competency in working from a holster and performing reloads. Open to all. Background checks are required, unless the student is a sworn law enforcement officer, corrections officer, private licensed security, or US Military personnel. Documented completion of a basic handgun safety course is required.

Course Outline

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Practice presentation and recovery from the holster.
• Discuss and apply sight picture and its relationship to size and distance.
• Develop a deeper understanding of trigger control.
• Apply fundamentals to effectively engage a target with multiple shots.
• Refine the fundamentals of marksmanship.
• Reinforce foundational reloading techniques.
• Understand and apply malfunction clearance procedures.
• Expand on single hand marksmanship techniques.
• Establish moving then shooting skill sets.
• Conduct target to target transition drills.

Classes starting at 8:30am will run until 4:00pm.

Equipment List

• Quality functional semi-automatic pistol – Full size and compact pistols only (semi-auto center fire pistols only - revolvers or .22 caliber pistols are not allowed)
  • NO micro pistols or pocket pistols to include: P238, P938, P365, M&P Shield, Glock 43, etc.
  • Full framed “Micro guns” can be used (Fuse, x macro, etc.). Must have an appropriate holster (No IWB Holsters).  Firearm must have high magazine capacity, 15 rounds flush fitting. However, it will always come down to Instructor discretion.

• Magazine pouch
• Dominant side, hip-mounted holster or dominant side, belt-mounted holster
  • Holster Requirements:
    • Must completely support the pistol.
    • Must not collapse once drawn.
    • Must fit properly to the belt. 
    • When holstered, the trigger guard must be completely covered. 
    • Must be oriented in a safe direction for drawing. 
    • “Trigger Finger” style retention devices are not permitted.
    • Must be able to draw and holster one-handed; Support hand cannot be utilized.
    • Holster compliance is at the discretion of the Instructor. If a holster is deemed to not comply with safety requirements, a loaner SIG SAUER pistol and/or appropriate holster will be provided. Exceptions can be made for Agency or Department issued equipment. Questions? Please call us at 603.610.3400. 
• Please wear long pants with pockets and belt loops, a sturdy 1.5" belt, closed toe shoes (no flip flops or sandals), and a crew neck (T-shirt) or button-up shirt (no low-cut neckline)
• Hydration system
• Wraparound eyewear, polycarbonate lenses or non-shattering prescription glasses
• Recommend electronic hearing protection or earmuffs and earplugs
• Loading devices (optional)

Tuition includes free loan of firearms, holsters, safety glasses and hearing protection at the Epping, NH, New Smyrna Beach, FL, and Centennial, CO locations.

Ammo

• Estimated round count: 400 rounds pistol
• For Epping, NH courses, non-toxic, non-jacketed FRANGIBLE ammunition may be required
• Lead core ammunition to be used on steel only
• No green/brown tip, armor piercing, or surrogate rounds to be used on steel at any time
• Ammunition is available for purchase from the Epping, New Smyrna Beach, and Centennial facilities only
