The Battle of Mogadishu was fought on October 3-4, 1993, during the Somali Civil War in Mogadishu, Somalia. On October 3, 1993, Task Force Ranger, composed of elite U.S. Army, Air Force, and Navy special operation troops, launched a mission intended to capture warlord Mohamed Far Aidid and two leaders of his Habr Gidr clan. During the raid, Somali militia shot down two American UH060 Black Hawk Helicopters resulting in a 15-hour overnight battle. Despite being outnumbered, Task Force Ranger inflicted heavy casualties with over 500 Somali militiamen killed. During the battle and remaining deployment, Task Force Ranger suffered 19 killed and 73 wounded. Help finally arrived early morning October 4th from the 10th Mountain Division. The armored vehicles could only fit the critically wounded soldiers. The remaining wounded and sleep deprived soldiers were left to fend for themselves and run 4km out of the city. This has become known as the “Mogadishu Mile.”
Sunday, October 6th, SIG SAUER Academy will be hosting their fourth annual Mogadishu Mile.
The Mogadishu Mile event is to honor the heroic actions of Task Force Ranger and raise money for the Three Rangers Foundation, an organization that supports active duty and former Rangers, their families, and Ranger Gold Star families from the US Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment, to include Veterans of affiliated supporting units.
SIG SAUER Academy is a proud host location for the “Mog Mile”, a 1-mile commemorative run. Participants can choose to walk, run, or tackle the WOD. The event starts at 9:00 AM, and you can start your mile anytime between 9:00 AM and 11:30 AM.
Varsity Mog Mile WOD (Workout of the Day) is for those seeking an extra challenge, sourced from the Three Rangers website. This workout is designed for minimal equipment and will be led by the SIG SAUER Tactical Games Team in two sessions:
