Unknown Distance (16 Hours)

Overview

Unknown Distance is a cumulative course in the Precision Scoped Rifle (PSR) series bringing forward skills learned in previous PSR classes and adding the element of determining shooter’s range to target by simply using the shooter’s reticle to closely estimate range. This class requires that the student have received adequate training in all prior PSR skills.

This comprehensive two-day class begins with a classroom portion to explain the theory and techniques involved in using the reticle for range estimation. Students will practice these techniques both dry and live. When live, the students will be rewarded with a hit on a small target adjacent to their “ranging” target if they have milled correctly, made proper scope adjustments, applied proper shooting fundamentals, and correctly compensated for wind and/or other environmental factors. The student will range targets close to 100 yards and up to 600 yards.

Experience Requirements

Precision Scoped Rifle 102 or the equivalent are required to attend this course. This is an intermediate level long distance rifle class. The student needs to know and be able to demonstrate safe gun handling, weapon system familiarity, and foundational marksmanship skills.
 

Course Outline

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Develop understanding of minute of angle and milliradians relative to scope reticles.
• Develop understanding of what must be considered to properly use a reticle to determine unknown distance
• Develop understanding of using reticle to properly and accurately determining distance to potential target.
• Develop understanding of what factors can influence proper range estimation and how to compensate for those factors.
• Reinforce each shooter’s fundamentals of marksmanship.
• Reinforce ability to understand and apply the “shot process” to each shot.
• Reinforce use and purpose of data book.
• Emphasize ability to be successful in uncomfortable positions while shooting a scoped rifle.
• Acquired knowledge and skills relative to determining a target’s unknown distance and successfully engaging that target.

Tuition includes free loan of firearms, holsters, safety glasses and hearing protection at the Epping, NH and New Smyrna Beach, FL  locations.

*We strongly recommend you bring your own Precision Scoped Rifle with sling for this course. We have a limited number of rifles for student use.*

Equipment List

• Quality, functional center fire rifle capable of obtaining and maintaining a 1 MOA group. 1 magazine minimum.
• Footwear suitable for range use
• Clothing suitable for training in any weather
• Wraparound eyewear, polycarbonate lenses or non-shattering prescription glasses
• Hearing protection for shooting 
• Match grade ammunition suitable for that rifle

Ammo

• Estimated round count: 40 rounds rifle
• Lead core ammunition to be used on steel only
• No green/brown tip, armor piercing, or surrogate rounds to be used on steel at any time
• Ammunition is available for purchase from the Epping, New Smyrna Beach, and Colorado Springs facilities only
• If you bring ammunition for a loaner rifle, it must be factory loaded .308WIN Match
