Shotgun 101: Shotgun Fundamentals (8 Hours)

Overview

This course is specifically designed for the new shotgun owner who would potentially like to explore the use of a shotgun. This introductory course provides students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to safely handle, load, fire and unload a pump-action shotgun. Students will gain knowledge on various shotgun action types and equipment options when selecting one for defensive purposes. Time is spent both in the classroom and on the range in a comfortable learning environment. Students will also be guided through shotgun manipulation drills and range exercises designed to increase personal comfort level and develop a solid skill base. With the proper fundamentals, the shotgun’s recoil will be manageable, and the shotgun will become more enjoyable to shoot. Learn why the shotgun is an extremely versatile and effective tool.

Experience Requirements

None. Open to all. Background checks are required, unless the student has a permit to carry from his/her state of residency or is a sworn law enforcement officer, corrections officer, private licensed security, or US Military personnel. Documented completion of a basic handgun safety course is required.

Course Outline

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Understand the responsibility of firearms ownership.
• Identify the principal parts of a shotgun, action types, and how they function. 
• Summarize the applications of the shotgun.
• Explain how to safely handle, use, transport, and store a shotgun.
• Select the appropriate shotgun ammunition type for a specific task.
• Select and set-up a shotgun to suit their specific needs. 
• Practice safely loading and unloading a pump action shotgun.  
• Perform a status check on a pump-action and/or semi-auto shotgun.
• Apply shotgun marksmanship fundamentals.  
• Summarize the process to clean, maintain, and lubricate a modern shotgun.
• Perform a function check on a modern shotgun.

Equipment List

• Suitable footwear
• Clothing suitable for training in any weather
• Hydration system
• Wraparound eyewear, polycarbonate lenses or non-shattering prescription glasses
• Recommend electronic hearing protection or earmuffs and earplugs

Shotguns will be provide for use by the SIG SAUER Academy. No personally owned shotguns can be used for this course. Tuition includes free loan of firearms, holsters, safety glasses and hearing protection at the Epping, NH location.

Ammo

• Estimated round count: 100 rounds bird shot, 5 rounds buckshot, 5 rounds slug
• Lead core ammunition to be used on steel only
• No green/brown tip, armor piercing, or surrogate rounds to be used on steel at any time
• Ammunition is available for purchase from the Epping facility only
