Shooting Sooner I (8 Hours)

Overview

World class competitive shooters all have one thing in common: they never stop refining their skills. The Shooting Sooner Series of courses is specifically designed to enhance students’ ability to engage targets rapidly and accurately by focusing on increasing efficiencies. Part I of this series emphasizes breaking down the fundamentals, refining techniques, and applying strategies that focus on economy of motion.  Students will isolate and refine the foundational skills needed to be successful within the sport of USPSA.

Experience Requirements

Handgun 104 (or equivalent) or have a USPSA C classification or higher before enrolling in Shooting Sooner I. The student MUST be able to demonstrate how to safely load, fire, and unload a handgun. Open to all. Background checks are required, unless the student is a sworn law enforcement officer, corrections officer, private licensed security, or US Military personnel. Experience with a shot timer preferred.

Course Outline

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Deconstruct the draw procedure to improve consistency and efficiency
• Refine the draw process through dry fire and live fire exercises
• Experiment with grip placements and pressures that mitigate recoil and allow for a quick recovery to target
• Isolate the reload process to improve consistency and efficiency
• Critique reloading methods for efficiency during dry fire drills
• Apply practical aiming strategies

Equipment List

• Handgun, major caliber 9MM, 357 SIG, 40 S&W, 45 ACP
• Dominant side, hip-mounted holster or dominant side, belt-mounted holster
  • Holster Requirements:
    • Must completely support the pistol.
    • Must not collapse once drawn.
    • Must fit properly to the belt. 
    • When holstered, the trigger guard must be completely covered. 
    • Must be oriented in a safe direction for drawing. 
    • “Trigger Finger” style retention devices are not permitted.
    • Must be able to draw and holster one-handed; Support hand cannot be utilized.
    • Holster compliance is at the discretion of the Instructor. If a holster is deemed to not comply with safety requirements, a loaner SIG SAUER pistol and/or appropriate holster will be provided. Exceptions can be made for Agency or Department issued equipment. Questions? Please call us at 603.610.3400. 
• Magazine pouches

• Sturdy belt at least 1.5” wide
• Footwear suitable for rapid movement and turning
• Clothing suitable for training in any weather
• Hydration system
• Wraparound eyewear, polycarbonate lenses or non-shattering prescription glasses
• Recommend electronic hearing protection or earmuffs and earplugs

Tuition includes free loan of firearms, holsters, safety glasses and hearing protection at the Epping, NH, New Smyrna Beach, FL, and Centennial, CO locations.

Ammo

• Lead core ammunition to be used on steel only
• No green/brown tip, armor piercing, or surrogate rounds to be used on steel at any time
