Low Light Pistol Operator (8 Hours)

Overview

In this course the essentials of low light equipment selection will be discussed, to include handheld flashlights, pistol-mounted light sources, and support equipment. Students will be taught techniques to effectively search, navigate, identify potential threats and engage, when necessary, in a low light environment.

Experience Requirements

This is an intermediate level class. Student must have completed Introduction to Defensive Handgun Skills* or an equivalent course prior to taking this class. The student needs to know and be able to demonstrate safe gun handling, weapon system familiarity, foundational marksmanship skills, and working from a holster.

Students failing to meet and maintain our safety requirements and/or who cannot meet and immediately demonstrate the minimum skills required for the specific class may be removed from training. Please ensure you have read through the class description and fully understand our prerequisites before registering.

*Students who successfully completed the 2-day course 'Handgun 104: Introduction to Defensive Handgun Skills' prior to February 2024 will have fulfilled the prerequisites necessary to enroll in any courses that require successful completion of either the 1-day 'Handgun 104: Advanced Handgun Skills' or the 1-day 'Introduction to Defensive Handgun Skills' course.

Course Outline

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Understand what type of flashlight to purchase
• Understand the 8 principles of Low Light 
• Understand the various handheld flashlight techniques
• Reload in low light
• Clear malfunctions 
• Transition from target to target under low light 
• Shoot on the move in low light
• Know where to store flashlights on them for easy access

Equipment List

• Pistol in one of the following calibers: .380, 9MM, .357SIG, ,38SPL, .40S&W, or .45ACP (no other calibers allowed) (semi-auto center fire pistols only - revolvers or .22 caliber pistols are not allowed)
• 3 magazines or 4 speed loaders/moon clips/speed strips minimum
• Dominant side, hip-mounted holster or dominant side, belt-mounted holster
  • Holster Requirements:
    • Must completely support the pistol.
    • Must not collapse once drawn.
    • Must fit properly to the belt. 
    • When holstered, the trigger guard must be completely covered. 
    • Must be oriented in a safe direction for drawing. 
    • “Trigger Finger” style retention devices are not permitted.
    • Must be able to draw and holster one-handed; Support hand cannot be utilized.
    • Holster compliance is at the discretion of the Instructor. If a holster is deemed to not comply with safety requirements, a loaner SIG SAUER pistol and/or appropriate holster will be provided. • Weapon mounted light with suitable holster (optional)
• Sturdy Belt at least 1.5" wide
• Footwear suitable for rapid movement and turning
• Casual, comfortable civilian clothing suitable for training in any weather (unless training in duty uniform)
• Wraparound eyewear, polycarbonate lenses or non-shattering prescription glasses
• Earmuffs and earplugs
• Knee pads

Tuition includes free loan of firearms, holsters, safety glasses and hearing protection at the Epping, NH, New Smyrna Beach, FL, and Colorado Springs, CO locations.

Ammo

• Estimated round count: 300 rounds pistol
• For Epping, NH courses, non-toxic, non-jacketed FRANGIBLE ammunition may be required - call for clarification
• Lead core ammunition to be used on steel only
• No green/brown tip, armor piercing, or surrogate rounds to be used on steel at any time
• Ammunition is available for purchase from the Epping, New Smyrna Beach, and Colorado Springs facilities only
