Ballistic Shield Operator (8 Hours)

Overview

This is a one-day course designed to prepare the armed professional operating the ballistic shield in the field. Topics covered in this course will educate the shield operator on manipulations, carry methods, shooting positions, armor plating, and rescue techniques. The information taught in this course will increase the safety of the armed professional and their efficiency with this tool.

Experience Requirements

Students must be Active Law Enforcement or Military and need to have an intermediate to advanced firearms skills. Students failing to meet and maintain our safety requirements and/or who cannot meet and immediately demonstrate the minimum skills required for the specific class may be removed from training. Please ensure you have read through the class description and fully understand our prerequisites before registering.

In order to receive a certificate of completion, students will be required to demonstrate proper safe gun handling and use of a ballistic shield in any environment through 8 hours of training. Students will demonstrate proper application of the fundamentals of shooting and weapon manipulations in a variety of situations utilizing a ballistic shield adhering to specific target standards established by the SIG SAUER Academy.

Course Outline

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Evaluate ballistic shield carry methods.
• Practice safe and effective shooting methods while shield is employed.
• Demonstrate one handed reloads with the shield.
• Perform a one-handed malfunction clearance with a shield.
• Demonstrate hallway movement with a shield.
• Utilize the threshold clearing technique with a shield.
• Practice officer down rescue maneuvers.

Equipment List

• Duty belt with holster and magazine pouches
• Dominant side, hip-mounted holster or dominant side, belt-mounted holster
  • Holster Requirements:
    • Must completely support the pistol.
    • Must not collapse once drawn.
    • Must fit properly to the belt. 
    • When holstered, the trigger guard must be completely covered. 
    • Must be oriented in a safe direction for drawing. 
    • “Trigger Finger” style retention devices are not permitted.
    • Must be able to draw and holster one-handed; Support hand cannot be utilized.
    • Holster compliance is at the discretion of the Instructor. If a holster is deemed to not comply with safety requirements, a loaner SIG SAUER pistol and/or appropriate holster will be provided. Exceptions can be made for Agency or Department issued equipment. Questions? Please call us at 603.610.3400. 
• Encouraged to bring own shield for continuity, not mandatory
• Suitable footwear
• Clothing suitable for training in any weather
• Wraparound eyewear, polycarbonate lenses or non-shattering prescription glasses
• Recommend electronic hearing protection or earmuffs and earplugs

Tuition includes free loan of firearms, holsters, safety glasses and hearing protection at the Epping, NH location
 

Ammo

• Estimated round count: 350 rounds pistol
• For Epping, NH courses, non-toxic, non-jacketed FRANGIBLE ammunition may be required - call for clarification
• Ammunition is available for purchase from the Epping, New Smyrna Beach, and Colorado Springs facilities only
