On Sunday October 1st, SIG SAUER Academy will be hosting the fourth annual Mogadishu Mile event. This is the 30th anniversary of the infamous Battle of Mogadishu during the Somali Civil War. This event is to honor the heroic actions of Task Force Ranger and raise money for the Three Rangers Foundation, an organization that supports active duty and former Rangers, their families, and Ranger Gold Star Families from the US Army's 75th Ranger Regiment, to include Veterans of affiliated supporting units.
This year starts with a first-hand account of The Battle of Mogadishu from former US Ranger, Aaron Williamson. This hour-long seminar will be followed by a 1-mile commemorative run around the Academy grounds. Participants have the option to walk, run, or run with the obstacle course.
The Battle of Mogadishu was fought on October 3-4, 1993, during the Somali Civil War in Mogadishu, Somalia. On October 3, 1993, Task Force Ranger, composed of elite U.S. Army, Air Force, and Navy special operations troops, launched a mission intended to capture warlord Mohamed Far Aidid and two top leaders of his Habr Gidr clan. During the raid, Somali militia shot down two American UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters resulting in a 15-hour overnight battle. Despite being outnumbered, Task Force Ranger inflicted heavy casualties with over 500 Somali militiamen killed. During the battle and remaining deployment, Task Force Ranger suffered 19 killed and 73 wounded. Help finally arrived early morning on October 4th from the 10th Mountain Division. The armored vehicles could only fit the critically wounded soldiers. The remaining wounded and sleep deprived soldiers were left to fend for themselves and run 4 km out of the city. This has become known as the "Mogadishu Mile".
The seminar starts at 8:30am in the Legion Conference Room at the SIG Experience Center.
Commemorative run begins at 10:00am. Participants can arrive anytime between 10am-11:30am.
This is a free event. We ask that participants donate $25 (or more) to the Three Rangers Foundation. Participants that donate will receive a Mog Mile t-shirt and are encouraged to wear it on the day of the event. The Foundation directly supports active duty and former Rangers, their families, and Ranger Gold Star Families from the US Army's 75th Ranger Regiment, to include Veterans of affiliated supporting units.
