Overview

Gain the knowledge, expertise, and techniques to train your students with pistol mounted optics. Learn the techniques to properly teach the use of pistol mounted optics (PMO) for self-defense and duty use. This three-day course is an in-depth, comprehensive training course focusing on the fundamentals and capabilities of PMO’s to learn the proper techniques for PMO sight-in and red-dot acquisition under various conditions and circumstances. After completion of this course, instructor-level students will have the skill set and techniques necessary to provide PMO training.

Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Pistol Mounted Optics Instructor certification valid for three (3) years.

Experience Requirements

Participants must currently be a certified pistol instructor. Students failing to meet and maintain our safety requirements and/or who cannot meet and immediately demonstrate the minimum handgun skills required for the specific class may be removed from training. Please ensure you have read through the class description and fully understand our prerequisites before registering.

Course Outline

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Discuss training considerations
• Properly sight in (zero)
• Refine reticle acquisition on presentation 
• Consider equipment inspection and maintenance 
• Understand advantages and limitations of a pistol mounted sight
• Understand holdover/offset and apply to drills 
• Review and apply downed optic drills
• Improve single handed shooting techniques
• Discuss multiple shot considerations
• Experience the benefits for shooting on the move
• Practice multiple target engagement techniques
• Experience the benefits of the optic for shooter diagnostics and performance improvement

Evaluation and Assessment: 
This course focuses on instructor development, emphasizing the student's ability to understand and effectively teach the course content. It is not a traditional "Pass/Fail" course. Instead, students will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate comprehension and instructional capability regarding red dot-specific topics.

The following distinctions apply:

• To Receive a Patch: You must take 5/6 on one of the two occasions that the TCSs are run.
• To Receive a Certificate of Achievement: Students who demonstrate both an understanding of the material and the ability to teach it will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement.
• To Receive a Certificate of Attendance: Students may receive a Certificate of Attendance instead, based on overall performance and at the instructor’s discretion.

The goal of this course is to foster instructional growth and ensure mastery of the course material for future teaching.

Equipment List

• Handgun, major caliber 9mm, 357 SIG, 40 S&W, 45 ACP with Red Dot Mounted
  • Semi-auto center fire pistols only – revolves or .22 caliber pistols are not allowed
• Dominant side, hip-mounted holster or dominant side, belt-mounted holster
  • Holster Requirements:
    • Must completely support the pistol.
    • Must not collapse once drawn.
    • Must fit properly to the belt. 
    • When holstered, the trigger guard must be completely covered. 
    • Must be oriented in a safe direction for drawing. 
    • “Trigger Finger” style retention devices are not permitted.
    • Must be able to draw and holster one-handed; Support hand cannot be utilized.
    • Holster compliance is at the discretion of the Instructor. If a holster is deemed to not comply with safety requirements, a loaner SIG SAUER pistol and/or appropriate holster will be provided. Exceptions can be made for Agency or Department issued equipment. Questions? Please call us at 603.610.3400.

• Sturdy belt at least 1.5” wide
• Footwear suitable for rapid movement and turning
• Clothing suitable for training in any weather

• Wraparound eyewear, polycarbonate lenses or non-shattering prescription glasses
• Recommend electronic hearing protection or earmuffs and earplugs 
• *For Epping, NH courses, a SIG SAUER P320RX with SIG ROMEO reflex sight is available for use if needed at no additional cost

Ammo

• Estimated round count: 1,000 rounds pistol
• For Epping, NH courses, non-toxic, non-jacketed FRANGIBLE ammunition may be required - call for clarification
• Lead core ammunition to be used on steel only
• No green/brown tip, armor piercing, or surrogate rounds to be used on steel at any time
• Ammunition is available for purchase from the Epping and New Smyrna Beach facilities only
